Direct Bonding or Veneers, Which Should I Choose?

Modern cosmetic dentistry has advanced to the point of being able to address just about any issue, and two of its greatest assets are direct bonding and veneers. Both are able to completely change the way people’s teeth look, but which one is best for you? If you’re currently weighing the benefits of these procedures, here are a few factors to consider that will help you make your decision.

Your Smile Goals

One of the best ways to pick between direct bonding and veneers is to consider what it is you want to have fixed. Both procedures are capable of addressing the most common cosmetic dental issues. However, direct bonding relies a bit more on the structural integrity of the natural tooth. Veneers, on the other hand, remove a portion of your enamel to correct discoloration, chips, and misalignment.

Longevity

While both will have a fairly long lifespan if well-maintained, veneers tend to outlast direct bonding. The former routinely persist for around twenty years, while the latter caps out at around ten. Moreover, porcelain veneers are stain-resistant, while the composite resin used in direct bonding is not. If you’re considering cosmetic dentistry to correct a yellow smile, you might consider veneers as a more permanent solution.

Convenience

Dental professionals want their patients to be as comfortable as possible, so most procedures are designed to cause minimal disruption. Some modifications, however, are more convenient than others. Direct bonding happens to be incredibly simple, with most fixes being done within a single appointment. Of course, that depends on the severity of the issue you’re facing.

Veneers are fast, but usually require two appointments to complete. You’ll also have to wear a temporary set for a while between appointments, which might require you to go on a soft food diet for a few weeks.

Cost

Direct bonding tends to be less expensive than veneers, at least initially. However, as was mentioned, the resin used in direct bonding is more likely to absorb stains than most veneers. That could mean needing to pursue additional whitening options somewhere down the line. Veneers also last longer, so long as you maintain them properly, meaning you’ll spend less money on replacements. In the end, most dentists offer financing options, so both procedures should be affordable.

The best way to know for sure which procedure will be best for you would be to ask your dentist. They’ll be able to consider your exact situation and advise you on which path to take. Until then, hopefully this guide has made deciding between these two a bit easier.
