5 Types of Tooth Pain an Emergency Dentist Should Monitor

Tooth pain is never fun to deal with. Whether it’s the result of an accident or an underlying oral health issue, a toothache is always a sign that something is wrong. Even so, not all forms of toothaches are urgent. So that you know when it’s time for you to visit your emergency dentist, here are five types of tooth pain that require urgent care.

Type #1: Consistent Discomfort

After undergoing root canal therapy, getting porcelain veneers, or having some other kind of dental procedure done, you should expect to experience some mild discomfort or irritation. But, if you ever experience this feeling with no apparent cause, this may be a cause for concern. This type of toothache can be caused by a variety of things, including shifting teeth, cavities, or an impacted wisdom tooth.

Type #2: Sharp or Throbbing Pain

If you have a tooth infection or a cavity, this may cause sharp or throbbing dental pain. An infected tooth will likely require a root canal to remove the damaged pulp and to prevent it from spreading elsewhere. If you put off treatment, the tooth will eventually have to be extracted.

Type #3: Frequent Sensitivity

Though some people naturally have sensitive teeth due to genetics, things like worn enamel, chips, cracks, gum disease, or a worn dental filling can also lead to sensitivity. Severe decay and bruxism, a condition characterized by grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw,  can also cause frequent sensitivity.

Type #4. Pain When Biting

A dental abscess, which is a pocket of pus that’s located in the tooth, gums, or bone that holds the teeth in place, may lead to pain when biting into food. Abscesses are caused by infections and require prompt treatment to prevent them from getting worse and to prevent the tooth from breaking.

Type #5: Pain in the Back of the Mouth

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your skull to your lower jaw. TMJ issues can cause pain that begins in the back of the mouth and may also make your teeth hurt. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) results in compromised jaw movement, swelling of the muscles that surround it, and pain. Additionally, it can lead to dental damage if you don’t have it treated promptly.

If you are experiencing any of these types of pain, make sure to visit a dentist as soon as possible to receive treatment. This will save your oral health from further damage and allow you to get your smile back on track!
